Expressing Your Originality With an Art Deco Chandelier

by Rachel on June 26, 2010

Art deco is the most glamorous and stylish design movement of the 20th Century and an art deco chandelier is a fabulous way of expressing your originality. Even today, they are still seen as the epitome of elegance and modern functional design. There are many art deco style light pieces available for discerning buyers and each one represents a quality seldom seen in many more contemporary designs.

The Art Deco movement began in Europe around 1908, but became more popular after the Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs in 1925. The art deco design movement at that time was a major influence on all of the decorative arts such as architecture, interior design, and industrial design. In many ways, it was an amalgam of the varied and different styles of the age: Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, Bauhaus, Neoclassical, Art Nouveau, and Futurism. It lasted until 1939 and the outbreak of World War II in Europe, but its influence is still very much evident today.

Individual art deco light pieces tended to have very geometrical forms and were often manufactured from chrome, which was a new material at that time. The glass used was etched, sand blasted, or enameled. Lights featuring the feminine form holding an opaque glass sphere were also very popular during the period.

Today, there are many authentic art deco lights available for purchase. For example, a French art deco chandelier dating back to the 1930’s would make a wonderful feature lighting piece for any modern home. Original pieces have usually been re-wired to fit modern homes and very often the metal has been re-plated, too.

The art deco decorative movement has the power to invoke much of the glamour of the great Hollywood film stars of the 1930’s and 1940’s and art deco chandeliers range from breathtakingly opulent, through to understated and elegant. Like many of the great stars of that era, art deco lights have a wonderful sense of presence and are able to dramatically transform a room from mundane, to unabashedly romantic.

By choosing a chandelier art deco, you can pretend for a few heady moments that you are Greta Garbo waltzing across a ballroom into the arms of Humphrey Bogart for the last dance of the evening. Whether you go for a chandelier with understated clean lines, or something with a dose of romantic opulence, you cannot fail to be captivated by the magical ambiance of an art deco light.

Not only do art deco lights look superb in all homes, they should be treated as an investment in style and beauty. If you buy an original art deco piece of lighting design, you can consider it an investment that will increase in value over time, if looked after and cherished. Art deco lighting is a fascinating slice of art and design history that will still look as good in another hundred years. It is also a wonderful heirloom to pass on to your grandchildren and future generations.

So go on, invest in an art deco chandelier for your home—you will not regret it!
