They are still a part withing Japanese culture and people who have an oriental themed garden will really like them. Authentic Soji lanterns were accommodated with candles but nowadays other lighting fixtures are used. Copper Hanging Lanterns

Other solar hanging lanterns are often made out of durable materials like copper. Copper is strong and can withstand almost all weather conditions and that is why it is used a lot to create outdoor lighting fixtures. Solid copper lanterns are often quite expensive and that is why most are only copper plated. They still look the same, only the price will be a bit lower. Copper lights always are a proper fit to almost any patio or garden because copper is a natural color. If you have a lot of wooden furniture, plants and bushes than a copper hanging lantern will be a good fit.

Where to use your Hanging Lanterns for?

Actually, lanterns are used for many situations because their design allows it to install them singular or in a group. If you only want 1 or 2 lanterns than you can use them on either side of your patio or near the entrance of your home. But if you buy them as a set than you might also use them as a way to illuminate your driveway or walkway. Because they are hanging on a hook the fixtures are almost near the ground and this makes them suitable as a guidance light and an aesthetic light as well. A hanging solar lantern holds the middle between post lights and accent lights and that is what makes them so unique and beautiful.

I have previously stated how much I like Moroccan Lanterns but I do understand that those designs are not meant for everyone. I consider myself to be a person that likes his home interior to be a bit loud, full with lighting accents, plants and wooden furniture. I like wooden furniture because it gives your home a natural look, like your living in a forest only than with all luxuries still intact. If you like wooden furniture or if you like rustic designs than you will probably also like wooden lanterns.

Most wooden lanterns are intended to accommodate with candles but you if you take some time and effort than you will probably also find some that you can accommodate with light bulbs. Your basic wooden lantern is probably square shaped and has a wooden frame with glass doors/walls. Different types of wood are used and that makes you able to use it in a very versatile way, suitable for any decor. Let's have a look on some nice designs I have found on the web. On the left you see a great example of a nice looking white wooden lantern. It is an antique lantern which you can notice because the paint is peeling off. Because of this the lantern is looking very rustic which in my opinion only makes it more attractive. you can accommodate it with multiple small candles or with one large candle. I like smaller candles because you can use more of them which is more fun to look at.

On the right you see something a bit different. Instead of peeling paint you see a well painted brown wooden lantern which has a very nice natural look. This is a very cute set of 2 lanterns, a big one and a small one. They are walnut finished and are hinged so you can use them  as a table top lantern or hang them against a wall or in a tree. Because they are so small you can only place 1 candle in them which makes them cute but not really a showcase to your home. The best way to use them is on your coffee table or as a table top lantern.

If you like big and contemporary than this might be your wooden lantern. It was hand made in Brazil, assembled from 8 wooden pegs. The metal that is used in the design is very rustic. It has a large glass door which you can open in order to place candles inside it.  It will not fit in any design but it it does fit in yours than it will really look great. Because it is so big you can easily place it on the ground so it will get full notice.

Antique railroad lanterns can still be found in many shops and marketplaces and they are quite popular. They have a metal cage and a globe that is translucent, protecting the light source from breaking. They were used to inspect the railways if everything was fine or as a relaying signal for incoming trains. If you are a collector than you are probably looking for designs that used kerosene or signal oil. Most railroad lanterns were use by the railroad crew but some were used by the crew working in the train. If the lantern still carries a mark of the railroad company it belonged to than this is valued extra. A very good place where you can still find an antique railroad lantern is eBay.

How to recognize a real antique Railroad Lantern?

It is not easy to find an authentic lantern because there are a lot of cheap replicas. You will need some experience and know exactly how they look if you want to recognize an original antique lantern used in the railroad industry. I found this video on youtube that might help you but it can not give you any guarantees. Your best bet would be to buy one in an antique shop and pay a lot of money for it, or buy one from ebay or on a flea market and hope to be lucky. One aspect that will help in the progess is the railroad mark that should be on top of the lantern. However, not all authentic lanterns have these marks so you might miss recognizing them if you solely depend on the marking.
