Motion Detectors: It is important to read the small lines on the packaging stating if your coach light comes with a motion detector or not. Motion detectors can truly be an outcome if you want to save money and not lit your lamps the entire night but if you are living near a busy pedestal road than maybe you should go for a HI LO light instead.

Basically you have to look at 2 different aspects of a motion detector. First you want to know how sensitive it is, to what range will it detect moving objects? Some detectors will only detect movement up to 10 feet while others will go up to 30 or 40 feet. You also want to look at an option to adjust the sensitivity. You also want to look at what direction the detector can detect motion. Cheaper coach lights will only detect movement that is right in front of them while others have a range up to 150 degrees. You want to know if both aspects are adjustable because you don't want your light to jump on and off the entire night.

HI LO

A HI LO coach light also has an integrated motion detector but instead jumping from no light to full power, these lights will automatically emit a soft glowing light when it gets dark and switch to full power when they detect motion. If you expect your coack lighting to go on and off frequently than a HI LO light will extend the life time of the lamp significantly.

Lighting Options

As stated above, more expensive lamps will probably have more features that come with it. You might want to select how long the light will run on full power once it gets activated.  Do you want it to light up for 5 minutes, 10 minutes or maybe more? Some will also offer the option not to switch to full power once it gets activated but instead emitting a soft glowing light which will be enough to illuminate an area and not wake up everyone in the neighborhood at the same time.
