If you have a high ceiling or a large room than chandeliers are a great lighting option to consider. Although chandeliers come in all sizes, the big ones are far more impressive than the small ones. Although they look great in any decor, sometimes it is not that easy to properly clean them because of the shape and size of the chandelier. Chandelier cleaning is important because your guests will notice when there lays dust on it or when there are fingerprints and spots on the glass work. But how to clean a chandelier? The best thing to do before you are planning to clean your chandelier is visiting the shop you bought it from and ask them. Basically there are two ways to clean a chandelier, wet cleaning and dry cleaning. It is perfectly doable to clean it yourself but if you don't know where to start or if you don't want to take the risk of breaking anything than it is in your best interest to call a cleaning company instead.
Safety First
Safety is a very important factor because you don't want to break your chandelier but you also don't want to electrify yourself or fall down a chair while being busy cleaning. You will need a light fixture while you are going to clean your chandelier but you can not use your chandelier. Use another lamp that will produce enough light so you are able to see what you have to clean. Also make sure that there is no electricity on the bulbs of the chandelier. A good way to do this is by either disconnecting the entire electricity network or by turning off the power switch on the wall and place a piece of paper over the switch on the wall so you won't accidentally turn it on. You should also remove tables and chairs that are near your chandelier so you will not tremble on anything while you are busy cleaning. When everything is safe you can bring a ladder in place that is long enough to get on the top of your lamp without using the final step your ladder.
How to clean Crystal Chandeliers?
If you have a crystal chandelier than you should take some extra precautions before you start cleaning. You want to place plastic sandwich bags on every light bulb and secure the sandwich bags with rubber bands. It is also a good idea to place a soft double folded blanket in place beneath your chandelier, just in case a crystal will fall down. You also might add a drop cloth beneath your chandelier to adsorb the cleaner and avoid letting it fall on the ground.
If you want to choose the easy way than you can buy chandelier cleaning products in a shop. This saves time and effort and is much easier than mixing the cleaning products yourself. You could also mix 1 unit of isopropyl (or ammonia) with 3 units of distilled water instead. Your next step will be to spray the cleaner on all parts of your chandelier except on the parts that contain electricity wires. If the crystals are not too dirty you can wait until the crystals are drip dry. If they are too dirty than you have to clean every crystal by hand and hand wash it with your cleaning solution. Once everything is dry again you can remove the plastic bags an clean all the non crystal parts of the chandelier with a soft cloth that contain a little bit of the cleaning solution.
Before you turn the power back on you should let your chandelier dry over night.
Chandelier cleaning should be done regularly to enjoy your crystal chandelier the fullest. If you do it every 2 or 3 months than you will only need to spray the crystals instead of washing them by hand.
