Japanese Garden Lanterns

by on June 22, 2010

If you want to create an oriental or typically Japanese garden than you can not go without Japanese garden lanterns. A Japanese garden is designed in a specific way, not using any straight lines in the design and this is also something you will see in their lanterns. Typical lanterns are the ones made out of rice paper which have both traditional and spiritual meanings. Pagoda's are another popular  type of Japanese lanterns you can use for your oriental garden. If you want to decorate your garden with some oriental lanterns than you have to decide how many you want and how large they are going to buy. You can find them in all sizes and you can even find tealight lanterns available in oriental design.

Japanese Paper Lanterns

Paper lanterns were used to celebrate spiritual holidays and they would serve you health for your family and good luck. It was, and still is, a custom to send a paper lantern in to the sky with the use of a small candle that heats the air. If you want to use paper lanterns in to your Japanese garden you can't use candles to accommodate them because of the danger of fire. Most paper lanterns are accommodated with light bulbs that run on low voltage or solar energy.

You can use them in various ways and it is fun to use them as a decoration piece because they are so versatile to use. If you want to add them to your oriental garden you don't want to add to many of them because oriental gardens are all about less is more. Keep it simple and don't overdo it. However, if you want to use them for another purpose, like a dinner party, than you can use a lot of them and hang them close together just as shown on the picture on the left.

These are some popular designs you can purchase on Amazon.

Japanese Pagoda Lanterns

Another popular Japanese garden lantern to use is the pagoda lantern. Pagoda's are large towers you can find in most cities and villager in western Asia. They both have spiritual and religious meanings and when you have one in to your garden it will protect you from evil spirits and bring good luck to your family.

An authentic pagoda is made out of cement because that material was cheap to use. The disadvantage of using cement pagoda lanterns is that they can not withstand the rain and wind and they usually break after 1 or 2 years. If you want something more durable, a granite, stone or even metal pagoda lantern is a much better option. Off course these durable materials will be more expensive compared to simple cement designs.

If you want to use some Japanese garden lanterns in your oriental garden than pagoda's or paper lanterns are your best option. They look great and will be a nice addition to your garden, oriental styled or not.
