LED Solar Garden Lights: A Good Alternative?

Written by on June 9, 2010 – 3:02 pm -

Recent years solar powered garden lights have become immense popular because of their simplicity. People like the fact that they don't have to work with wiring and electricity anymore when they are installing garden lighting. But until recently solar lights were never considered to be of the same quality as low voltage lighting. The lights were less bright and needed a lot of sunlight in order to charge their batteries and emit light in the first place. LED technology has changed all of this and made solar lighting much more efficient to work with. Although you will still need sunlight, once the batteries are fully charged the emitted light is almost of the same quality when you compare it to low voltage lighting.

LED stands for light emitting diodes and it is a far more efficient technology than conventional bulbs. Because of this technology LED solar garden lights can be as bright as  low voltage lighting and still use less energy that it did with conventional bulbs. Another advantage is that they are also quite durable and will last for about 6 to 10 years before you need to replace them. If you compare this with lights that run on rechargeable batteries which lasts for about 3 years, than you are way better off.

A single LED light will emit less light than a bulb but the great thing is that you can use multiple LED lights in a single lamp. In this way you are able to create spotlights with 1o or 20 LED's and soft glowing lights with 2 or 3 LED's. The only real problem that you can encounter is the fact that you will still need sunlight. You need to face the solar collector that is attached to the lights directly to the sun. If you are living in an area where there is not much sunlight or if your garden has a lot of trees creating shades than this might become a problem.

However, most of the time this will not be a problem because it is not likely you will let your LED solar garden lights shine the entire night. If you use them as accent lighting than you will probably use them for a few hours every night and they don't need much sunlight in order to make them work for a few hours. However, if you want to let them shine the entire night because you want to use them as a security light or as driveway lights than  not enough sunlight can become a problem.

If you compare the price and quality of solar LED garden lights than they have improved significantly over the last few years. Expectations are that this improvement will go on and within a few years they will probably become even more efficient.

You can use LED solar lights for almost any purpose. They are very popular to use as accent or decoration lighting but you can also use them as driveway or walkway lighting. Just make sure that when you are planning to buy new solar powered lights you go for LED lights and not for bulbs.
