Low energy GU10: Being Energy Efficient

by Rachel on June 20, 2010

A low energy GU10 is a type of light bulb suitable for domestic and commercial use. GU10 low energy bulbs come in a variety of different designs. They range from the spot light bulbs designed for ceiling spotlights in rooms such as a kitchen or bathroom, to the types of bulbs found in table lamps. This type of bulb can usually offer a considerable saving on energy costs, which in an energy efficient household, is very desirable.

Being energy efficient is very important these days. Global warming is a subject that is increasingly in the news and most people are looking to do their bit for the environment. Many of us make sure our homes are as energy efficient as possible. We install double glazing windows and spend lots of time and money searching for appliances that are A rated. But these are not the only things to consider—lighting is an important factor when making energy savings in the home.

By installing low energy GU10 bulbs in all suitable light fittings, you can make significant savings of up to 80% on your annual energy bill, as well as helping save the environment for future generations.

To save energy, make a point in checking all of your light fittings to see if you still have the high-energy types of bulbs installed. If you do, buy some low energy bulbs and change them. It is worth noting, however, that not all light fittings are suitable for the GU10 bulbs, so check the original instructions if you are uncertain.

GU10 low energy light bulbs are great for a commercial environment. With an average 8000 hours of light from a GU10 bulb, not only will a business make savings on its energy bills, it will also not need to replace the bulbs very often.

This is a significant bonus if the light fittings are situated in highly inaccessible locations that require specialist access, for example in auditoriums or theatres. By reducing the number of occasions when light bulbs need to be replaced, savings are also made in manpower time.

This type of bulb is also suitable for rooms where lighting is required for long periods of time. Toilets in public or commercial buildings are a prime example of this type of setting. There is nothing more irritating than going to a public toilet at night, only to find half of the lights do not work and you are forced to perform your ablutions in semi darkness. At least when low energy GU10 bulbs are installed, the chances of this unfortunate occurrence are limited.

Low energy GU10 bulbs are very useful for children’s lamps and bedroom lights. Very often, kids have night-lights that they insist on leaving switched on all night, as they are afraid of the dark. With a traditional lamp, the bulb needs replacing regularly and the energy cost is high. By replacing the old bulb with a GU10 bulb, the child can continue to have the lamp on all night, safely.
