Replace your Halogen Bulbs With MR16 LED Bulbs

by Rachel on June 26, 2010

MR16 LED bulbs are designed to replace existing MR16 halogen bulbs. They offer substantial savings against traditional halogen bulbs and can last up to 50 times longer. The traditional low voltage dichroic MR16 lamps are mainly found in down lighters and spot lights, both inside and outside. LED MR16 lamps are an exact replacement for the older style light bulbs. Manufacturers are gradually phasing out the older light bulbs in favor of the more energy efficient MR16 LED bulb.

MR16 LED lamps are available in various color temperatures, notably Cool White and Warm White. MR16 warm white lamps can be successfully mixed with normal mains voltage halogen GU10 bulbs in the same room or area. These bulbs work best with power drivers, followed by toroidal transformers. Although they will work with most electronic transformers, the bulb life will be decreased by an average of approximately 50% of the quoted average life.

The huge savings to be made in running costs with these bulbs is an excellent reason to use them as replacements as soon as the old bulbs die. A 5 watt MR16 can make an average saving of as much as 90% compared to its 50 watt halogen rival. These savings are long term as the LED bulb is rated at 30, 000 hours as opposed to approximately 1,000 hours for the mains voltage equivalent MR16 bulb.

If there are a lot of these bulbs around your property, this equates to a considerable saving on your energy costs over time. It also means you do not have to worry about replacing bulbs as often—which in inaccessible areas is a definite bonus.

In the event that your business has extensive spot lighting, either inside the office building, or outside as part of the landscape design, you probably do not want to worry about spending huge amounts of time replacing dead bulbs. In a huge area, for example a large office building, replacing bulbs is not only a cost in terms of the bulb—it is also a cost in terms of employee wages. By changing to the energy efficient and superior alternative, you can significantly reduce your overheads.

A MR16 LED light bulb offers increased illumination compared to traditional LED bulbs. For some rooms, extra bright light is an absolute necessity. The kitchen is one such example. When you make a decision about lighting for your kitchen, you need to consider all areas of the room.

If you have a dining kitchen with a table where the kids eat their meals and you enjoy more informal entertaining, installing super bright LED lighting above the table would not be appropriate. However, they are great for installing above a worktop or food preparation area. In this instance, you need excellent lighting when you are preparing food. Ideally, you would have several down lighters fitted across the ceiling to minimize potential shadows at night. By using the most energy efficient MR16 bulbs, you can enjoy bright lighting for far longer than you would expect with traditional halogen bulbs.
