In the 17th century there were no cars to travel with and the main transport that was used were horses. Carriages were invented as a first mean to transport goods and people from one place to another. Back than it was the fastest way to travel and a popular and expensive way too. To increase the speed of traveling the carriage would ride as many hours on a day as possible and that included traveling at night. In order to see where the coachmen was going they had to install outdoor carriage lights. These carriage lights are nowadays quite popular to use as porch lights or post lights.
Authentic outdoor carriage lighting were made out of simple materials as wood and brass. People like to install products with a little history attached to them and that is why these durable lights have become valuable collectible items. The carriage lamp light was mounted on the side of the carriage in order to provide light for both the coachmen and the passengers as well. It was provides as a mean to communicate with each other while they were driving and an important way for the coachmen to see where the road was. Wheels were not made out of rubber back than but out of wood and if he would hot a rock there was a very good chance the wheel would break down. On busy roads they also accounted as a safety measure allowing other people to see a carriage was appraoching.
Antique carriage Lamp
Nowadays we don't use carriages as a transport method anymore but we still like the lights that were used back than. You might think the name is a little bit misplaced because modern carriage lamps are made out of other materials like glass, nickel and chrome instead of wood. However, the design still resembles the authentic look of an outdoor carriage light and that is why they are still named that way. They are well suited to use as a porch light or walkway light and because they are modern, you can also add a motion detector to them.

Modern Carriage Lamp
Most carriage lamps you will see mounted on walls are not authentic ones but are reproductions. But there is still a market for these antique carriage lamps and a lot of people are looking for them on flea markets, yard sales and antique shops. It might be hard to recognize a real antique carriage light but if you find one you might be able to make a good deal. Other good places to look at are online auction websites like eBay, just make sure you do not end up paying a lot of money for a reproduction carriage light.
