Provide Attractive Light With an Outdoor Sconce

by Rachel on June 30, 2010

Outdoor sconces are an excellent way of providing some attractive lighting around your patio, decking, or the exterior of your home. There are many different types of sconce lighting and you can pick and choose from lots of different designs until you find the one that suits your requirements.

Ceramic wall sconces can be painted to match the outdoor décor. If you have a home that is rendered and painted, why not install an outdoor sconce that blends in, yet still provides some attractive lighting at night. Alternatively, you can paint the sconce in an accent color and create a focal point. If you have painted your house a pale, daffodil yellow, then blue sconces would look very attractive. Experiment with color and see what amazing effects you can create!

An outdoor lighting sconce operating on a motion sensor is ideal for providing security lighting. This type of sconce is perfect for areas of your home where you would prefer some extra lighting at night, but don’t need it to be on permanently. Motion sensors will activate a light when movement is detected. They can be set to ignore small animals so that each time your cat goes gallivanting across your garden at night, your lights won’t switch on and off every five minutes.

Functional exterior wall sconces are a no-frills design for areas where you want lighting, but don’t need any kind of decorative light fitting. They tend to be very simple and utilitarian in design, which is ideal for commercial premises where exterior security lighting is required.

If, on the other hand, you prefer a touch of nostalgia in your outdoor wall sconce, then pick one with a traditional design. There are many styles to choose from, including brass wall sconces and lantern type designs. Exterior lanterns look lovely in older, period properties and there are many different types of lantern sconce, ranging from highly decorative, to simple and functional. You can fit lantern sconce lights on a porch to provide soft lighting for your guests when they arrive after sundown. Outdoor lanterns look attractive positioned around patio and decking areas and they can also be fitted inside conservatories.

If you wish to make more of a design statement with your outdoor sconce, why not pick a rustic or lodge design sconce. They are ideal for timber homes or cabins in the woods. You can choose a forged iron creation decorated with leaf patterns and fitted with amber coloured glass. It will add a touch of charm to your property. Or perhaps a craftsman or mission style sconce would fit in with your particular decorative scheme. This type of design proves that simple light fittings can be just as elegant as more elaborate fixtures.

With such a huge variety of exterior sconces to choose from, you should have no problem finding one that suits your decorative scheme. Whether you are looking for a light that adds to your existing ambiance, or something that will create some exceptional atmosphere around your home, outdoor sconces are perfect for bringing light and beauty to any modern home.
