If you have ever visited Japan, Thailand, Nepal or other countries that have many Buddhism worshippers than you have probably notices the large stone towers called a pagoda. They often reach to the sky and because of their height they are well suited for creating excellent lighting options. A pagoda is a place were people come to worship and it is probably derived from the Indian Stupa. They are not temples themselves but they are often located near Buddhist, Maoist or Taoist temples and they are spread widely among Asian countries. When a Buddhist can afford it, he will probably have some small Pagoda's placed on his own territory because they are important spiritual symbols. They intend to bring you good luck and they will protect you from harm. They will also support you and bring you good luck in your education and they ward of evil spirits from entering your home.
In English pagoda is translated as a tiered tower with multiple eaves and because of their amazing appearances you can know find them at garden supplies shops or on the Internet. Their popularity has spread over to the western world which is primarily using them for decorating purposes. many western people are intrigued by the spirituality that these symbols bring with them and we are also intrigued by their design.
Their are different types of pagoda's varying from design metal pagoda lighting to the more authentic pagoda lanterns. A pagoda lantern is a small pagoda tower which you can place in your garden for decoration purposes or even in your house. Possible lighting options are wired lighting, solar lighting and candle lights.
If you are planning to buy a pagoda lantern than you have to consider where you want to place them, how large you want it to be and out of what material it is made from.
Size
The size is an important factor to consider because in order to set the right ambiance in your garden, you have to take this in to account. A Lantern pagoda is often used to create an oriental ambiance in your garden and they are probably going to be the centrepiece of your garden or patio. If you have a large garden than out of decorative purposes it is best to buy a rather large pagoda or preferably 2 and place them in your garden with some space between them. The light they emit at light in combination with your other oriental garden decoration will really set the right mood.
If you want to place them on your patio than you better not buy those large pagoda lanterns because than they will take in too much space. You better buy a smaller item or combine two different sized pagoda's and put them on either side of your patio.
Although their intention is to place them outside, you don't have to limit yourself because they could also form indoor home decoration. You could consider a hanging pagoda lantern which you can hang on the ceiling.

Materials
Cement
Authentic pagoda garden lanterns are made out of cement because cement is a very cheap material to use in constructing these towers. It is also easy to manipulate and create the desired form and eaves. Because they are often made out of cement they tend to be not that expensive. However, we have to consider that most statues made out of cement won't last indefinitely and you will probably notice the decoy after a few years.
Stone, Granite
If you want to buy pagoda's that will last longer than you have to consider Granite or Stone. These materials are much less fragile but also much more expensive and for that reason people rather buy the ones made out of cement.
Metal
Metal casting is also frequently used to build garden pagoda lanterns because this material is almost indestructible and works very well with glass and other materials. Often they are decorated with glass doors which you can open to replace the bulb or place a candle in. Because they are made out of metal, they will weight much less which makes it much easier to place them on different areas in your garden or on your patio.
Wood
You will also find wooden pagoda lanterns because wood makes a structure look antique and authentic. Although this material is not used in Asia, here we like wood because of it's many advantages.
Light Source
As stated, there are different lighting options to choose from. Authentic lanterns often used candle lights because it is easy to place and rather cheap compared to electricity. In Asia not all houses are connected to electricity which makes candle light an important replacement. In the western world you can also find them with candle light options but these are most often the smaller towers or often a second lighting option beside the primarily one.
Wired Lighting
Most lanterns will work on electricity and for that reason you have to connect them to the power network. They come with a cord which you have to connect, if you don't like working with electricity than it is best to let someone else do it or use candle lights or solar powered pagoda lanterns instead.
Solar Power
A solar pagoda lantern has a solar battery attached to it which will charge the battery by sun light. The main advantages are that you don't have to connect them to the electricity network and they will not increase your electricity bill. The drawback is that solar light is not to be compared to wired lighting and even candle light and the designs are often not as nice too.
