Some lamps come with added rechargeable batteries which allow them to shine on cloudy days. Walkway solar lights emit a soft glowing light which is enough to light an area to see where you are going. They are well suited to use on your patio, driveway, walkway or garden. They are not well suited for landscape lighting if you want to accentuate certain areas.
Why shouldn't you use solar lights for your walkway?
Solar lighting is a rather new energy resource and the efficiency is still very low. The first lamps had an efficiency of 4% and newer lamps already have 30%. This number is likely to increase as a lot of research is done on how to achieve this but the fact is that solar lights still are not an efficient way to light your home exterior.
The main problem is that the light they emit is not of the same quality when comparing to low voltage lighting. It is not as bright and it loses intensity over night because the batteries are discharging over night. Another con is that they might not be well suited for countries or areas where there is not much sunlight. They will need sun to get their batteries charged and if it is cloudy all day this is not likely to happen.
Although the prices have dropped the last few years, solar lamps are still considered expensive when you compare them to the alternatives. You will need more lights to create the same amount of light which makes it an expensive purchase.
Types of solar walkway lighting
Leveled Ground Lights
There are nowadays two different types of solar lamps which you can use. The first one are your basic solar bulbs where the sun charge the batteries in order to shine the bulb inside the lamp. Another option are the more efficient solar LED lights. LED lights are far more efficient than any other type of bulbs or lamps and they are more durable too. Because they use less energy they will last longer and this will save you money.
Solar LED lights are frequently used to light a driveway or walkway because a low amount of light is needed to illuminate those areas. They are not as bright as low voltage lighting or solar bulbs which makes them not suited for all purposes.
You can place these lights in two ways on your walkway: on ground and leveled with the ground. If you place them on ground you want to place them directly at the side of your path where people will not tremble upon them. You can decide to place them on both sides of your walkway bot placing them on 1 side will in most situations be enough. Leveled ground lights are placed in to your walkway and are leveled to the ground. To do this you have to dig in to your walkway and place them there. Once they are installed they will guide you on your walkway and don't care if you step on them because they are made of strong materials.
